چکیده
This paper presents a method for establishing an optimal network design for the estimation of areal averages of rainfall events. The problem consists of minimising an objective function which includes both the accuracy of the areal mean estimation (as expressed by the kriging variance of estimation) and the economic cost of the data collection. The well known geostatistical variance-reduction method is used in combination with simulated annealing as an algorithm of minimisation. This methodology has several advantages which will be demonstrated in this paper. Several synthetic examples are shown in order to illustrate the performance of the methodology in two different optimisation problems: the optimal selection of a subset from a set of stations that already exist and the optimal augmentation of a previously existing network. q 1998 Elsevier Science B.V. Seven nested headwater catchments (8 to 161 ha) were monitored during five summer rain events to evaluate storm runoff components and the effect of catchment size on water sources. Two-component isotopic hydrograph separation showed that event-water contributions near the time of peakflow ranged from 49% to 62% in the 7 catchments during the highest intensity event. The proportion of event wate...

A recently developed version of the discrete-ordinates method is used along with elementary numerical linear-algebra techniques to establish an e$cient and especially accurate solution to what can be called Chandrasekhar's basic problem in radiative transfer, namely the problem of computing the radiation intensity in a "nite plane-parallel layer illuminated by an incident beam of radiation and ...

Surface roughness parameters were determined for harvested wheat fields over level terrain at the US Department of Energy’s Cloud and Radiation Testbed (CART) site in north-central Oklahoma. Measurements of wind speed and temperature were made by radiosondes and instruments mounted on 2 and 10 m towers during neutral and unstable atmospheric conditions in the atmospheric surface layer. Surface ...

Isotopic tracer and temperature measurements at large volume cold springs in the central Oregon Cascades are used to understand the pattern of groundwater flow. Standard oxygen and hydrogen isotope interpretations are used to determine the mean recharge elevation for springs. Carbon and helium isotopes are used to measure the component of dissolved magmatic gas in the spring waters. Inferences ...

Most hydrologic/water quality (H/WQ) models that use rainfall as input assume spatial homogeneity of rainfall. Under this assumption this study assesses the variability induced in calibrated model parameters solely due to rainfall spatial variability. The AGNPS model and a network of 17 raingauges were used. Model parameters were estimated using rainfall observed at each gauge location, one at ...
